Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is the second book of The Coyote and the Claw series, and I highly suggest reading the first, A Royal Pairing in Perish, first. It really sets up a lot for the second book. This genre isn’t one I read often, but I loved the style and will be reading more in the future.

The book is basically a written version of a graphic novel with superheroes. The descriptions are so vivid, I could imagine what the drawings would be if it were turned into a graphic novel! The story follows a group of good-hearted vigilantes who are determined to save their city of Perish, Florida. The FMC, June/Quick Claw, meets the MMC, Nikolai/Black Coyote, and his band of partners in the first book, where they battle a couple of super-baddies. In this volume, they battle an evil organization set on using Perish to beta test their terrible weapon. Naturally, world domination is their ultimate goal.

Without giving too much away, the duo (and several friends) face off against monsters running amok in their town as well as some demons from their past (not literal demons). I enjoyed this series SO much, despite having hesitations going into it. I want to note my hesitation stems from Batman being … not my favorite superhero from every Batman movie ever made. The book is ~loosely~ based on Batman & Catwoman, but both characters have way more depth than their muses. There’s a perfect amount of spice and the story is complex and compelling.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Thanks to C.G. Coppola and Happily Booked PR for the opportunity to read and review!
